Applied Music
The Applied Music class was established for students who want to work on their individual playing skills and improve their individual musicianship. It is a self-paced course where students are expected to set their own goals within a specified framework. The following are the expectations for the class:
- All students are required to come to class with the proper materials needed to work on their musical goals (instrument, mouthpiece, reeds, music, supplies, etc.)
- All students are required to spend the majority of the class period working on their musical goals (region music, solo music, ensemble music, band music, private lesson music)
- In the fall, all students are required to participate in the TMEA All State Audition process, starting with the Region Tryouts in December; In the spring, all students are required to participate in the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest as a soloist and may also choose to participate in an ensemble as well
- In the spring semester, all students will perform on an informal recital in the band hall for parents and other students. The recital will be scheduled sometime in May, after the AP testing is completed.
Starting with the second week of the semester, all students will play their material for the directors at least once each week for a grade. At the end of the grading period, the students will play a six-week exam from the music they are preparing. Grades will be given based on the level of achievement for the student.
While you are not required to make the All-Region Band or make a superior rating at Solo and Ensemble, you must be prepared enough to perform at a very high level. Simply showing up at the event without being prepared does not fulfill this requirement. With one hour of practice time built into your schedule, there is no excuse for a poor showing and your grade will be affected. Please make a note of the dates for the All-Region Tryouts, Clinic/Concert and Solo and Ensemble dates so that you will not have scheduling problems which will affect your grade.
